Port Louis : a 74 year old accident victim is slowly recovering after a highly complex medical operation performed by a multidisciplinary team at the Apollo Bramwell Hospital. Sarifa Lalmahamode had a road accident in January and her neck vertebrae connecting the base of her skull to the cervical spine was serious fractured. This condition, usually associated with the high cervical cord, is rare in the surviving trauma patient. The injury is highly unstable and usually followed by death. In an operation that lasted over 6 hours led by Dr. Satyendra Kumar, Senior Consultant Neurosurgery assisted by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Srinivasalu Santhanagopal , the medical team managed to stabilize the patient with plates, screws rods and sub-laminar hooks as the base of her skull and her upper part of her neck.
